I am an ex-smart meter fitter with 11 years of experience.
The easiest way to stop a smart meter from being a smart meter is to remove the communications hub. Although if you are a smart prepay customer, you will lose the ability to top up remotely/ on your app if you do this.
Eventually, the supplier will investigate why your meters are no longer sending reads and likely try to send somebody out to get it working again. But to remove the communications hub is a very quick way to stop the signals and smart features.
Here’s how you do it. See the picture below,
This is a SMETS2 smart meter. Yours may look slightly different as there are several different manufactures making these meters and hubs, but they are all the same fundamentally.
In the green box is the electric meter and in the blue box is the communications hub/ comms hub.
In the red box is the seal and screw securing the comms hub on top of the electric meter. The comms hub has a sim card in it which connects via the mobile phone network to a central server. The energy supply then connects to that server to get your readings.
Simply cut the seal in the red box in the photo with wire cutters/ pliers, undo the screw (its fairly long) and then the comms hub will pull off. Pull the comms hub off and put it down somewhere.
The lights on the comms hub may continue to flash for a few minutes because it stores a small amount of energy, once they stop flashing the comms hub is dead and there is no connection to the smart network. The meters are now dumb.
DO NOT interfere with any other seals or with your gas meter as it could kill you!!!
And to clarify there is NO legal obligation to have a smart meter. The suppliers have a government mandate to fit a certain amount of meters in a certain time and get a considerable fine if they don’t meet the mandate. This is why they are so pushy getting people to have a smart meter.
